I'm Thinking of Selling My Home...But What do I do with My Pet?


Selling a home that has pets of any kind can be a little challenging but if you work with your Realtor on scheduling and options it's totally doable! For this article we'll focus on dogs since they are the most common!

Of course the perfect scenario is to remove your dogs for every showing so your buyer can focus on your beautiful home and not your adorable puppy. Don't take offense, the buyer may be allergic to dogs or might have had a previous negative experience that gives them fear.

If your dog has to be home during showings and you are comfortable crating them, that's the next best option. This is mainly for the safety of your pet. Unfortunately we cannot screen every person who is coming into your home and you can't gage how your pet or the human buyer will react when they are presented with each other. The buyer may accidentally let the dog out the front door or not realize that your dog nips when you pet his back legs etc...

If your dog has to be home and cannot be crated, try to gate it off to a certain area of the home so the buyer can still look past the gate into the room but not come into contact with your doggie.

Perhaps the most important thing to consider when you have pets and you're selling your home is combatting pet odors. We all love our pets unconditionally and we tend to get accustomed to their natural odors. 

Don't over-do it with scents. It will just smell like you're covering something up and the overpowering scent won't have the effect you'd like. The best thing to do is to hire a professional to clean before you list. Steam clean your carpets and consider having a professional clean your vents and ductwork. Change you HVAC filter and place a home air purifier in your main living areas. Place a few scented items (wax warmers, plug ins, etc...) around the home. Choose the same scent for the whole house and limit your scented items to 3-4 for the whole house.

Following these tips will keep your pooch safe and your home looking and smelling clean and fresh!
