Making Intentional Decisions When Renovating
It's fun to renovate your home (if you're not doing the labor yourself). You get to pick out colors, materials, and dream up the most elaborate of spaces!
When you are getting ready to renovate keep in mind the following tip:
- If you're not a designer - hire one.
- How long are you going to stay in the home? If your answer is 5-10 more years than go with classic and neutral upgrades that will appeal to the masses. If you pick a design that's too trendy it will date your home to the era of that exact trend. (ie - 70's shag carpet and avocado appliances)
- Above all, make sure it's functional. It's easy to get carried away with fancy and beautiful faucets that flow like a waterfall but make sure you're aware of potential future oxidation due to the trickling effect.
- Hire licensed and recommended contractors. Cheaper is not always better. Make sure you get several quotes.
- Discuss potential renovations with a Realtor prior to completing them so you're comfortable with the investment. You will not always receive 100% of your investment back at resale.
- Decor after the renovation is completed is just as important! Don't skimp on the texture and art of the finished product.
Below are some recent renovations I've been lucky enough to come encounter with. Some I think are great, some not so much (overly trendy), but all unique in their own way!
